Here’s an Otocolobus manulnature’s Grumpy Cat — discovering a camera trap outside it’s den. Camera traps are used by biologists to lean about rare animals’ behavior, abundance, and health — just by setting up a solar-powered camera with a motion trigger. No physical trapping necessary.

O. manul (also known as Pallas’s cat) is about the size of a house cat, but you’ll notice has round pupils instead of slits. It lives in western China and the steppes of Central Asia.

You’d think that Pallas’s cat would rule the internet by now - but there aren’t too many photos of them because they are both rare and shy. The IUCN lists them as near-threatened. Just another reason to support species conservation!

When Angelina Jolie was searching for an actor to play Louis Zamperini in her much-anticipated biopic, Unbroken, the director needed to cast “a fighter.” Zamperini, an Olympic runner and World War II bombardier, crashed over the Pacific in 1943 and survived 47 days at sea, only to be captured and interred by the Japanese until the war’s end. “With the wrong actor, you couldn’t watch him suffer because it would be too painful,” she says. “With the right actor, you watch him go through his trials, you see that fire, and you root for him.” Watch Starred Up, the acclaimed British indie hitting U.S. theaters next month, and you’ll see why Jolie found her fighter in 23-year-old Jack O’Connell. As a rage-filled juvenile prisoner transferred to the same adult correctional facility as his father, O’Connell appears to have electricity coursing through every sinew, able to leap from stillness to white-hot violence to sorrow in a single scene. In truth, he’s had some real-world practice. After “racking up quite a record” as a raucous adolescent in the English working-class city of Derby, O’Connell turned to acting at 15, channeling his bad-boy energies into playing young men also struggling with inner conflicts—notably James Cook in the UK series Skins. Even Zamperini was “a self-identified delinquent” before he poured himself into track, O’Connell points out. Which may be why the two hit it off when the Unbroken cast met the 97-year-old, whom O’Connell calls “a flirt, a real charmer.” But what about Jolie’s word—is O’Connell a fighter? “Only by means of defense, man,” he jokes before turning philosophical about his career. “I used to have to fight for survival, then I met Angie. Now I’m coasting a little more. I prefer this.” Jack O’Connell in Elle Magazine (US), July 2014
